To Become a Jeweler

Known as either jewelers or precious stone/metal workers, these artists design and create various pieces and kinds of jewelry from engagement rings to accessories for Vouge models. Along with creating, they may also know how to adjust and repair and appraise gems. They develop technical skills like examining hardness and quality of product, and

polishing/chemical treating to make diamonds look their best. While no degree other than a highschool diploma is needed to begin working - since much of the training is long term and done on the job - there are wonderful programs across the nation which specialize in jewelry and offer BAs and MFAs, which inspire students to escape "kitch." Rhode Island School of Design and Savannah College of Art & Design have some of the most renowned programs, and other schools, especially in countries with mines like India, also have prestigious programs like the Gemmological Institute of India and the Indian Institute of Jewelry.
