 Making a Statement

For me, art is a therapeutic experience. Ever since I began work with jewelry and other sculptural media, it is the process which I find sacred. Each bead, each chain, and each jump ring is fastened or strung on by me, and watching all the parts come together to tell a story or express a feeling in relation to ourselves and others is what drives me to continue. I enjoy the thrill of the feedback, as I feel that jewelry making is an underexplored field in true avant-garde art, and feels more personal since it is worn and displayed on the body. The interactivity of this work is what gives them soul, because they do not shine until they are worn.

I especially enjoy working with delicate chains and elastic cord because it falls naturally and is easier to manipulate than sculpting wire, which allows for much more wiggle room in the final product because there isn’t as much of an expectation for perfection in the form, which gives me room for more creative liberty. Additionally, pieces which rely on beads are my personal favorite as they can carry the jewelry to the next level with their own individual, form, colors, and properties.

Currently, my work is focusing on relationships with people, things, and oneself. Those have often been the themes of my older, 2D works, and their motifs have made their way into my jewelry pieces. I’ve always been a deep thinker who spends time contemplating the complexities of my own emotions and the relationships with other people, and at times it can be a lonely and confusing practice, so I process them by making art that allows people to visually perceive these thoughts so they are either forced to either accept and acknowledge their realness or empathize with the work if they have also experienced similar emotions. In this fashion, I can make the intangible real and something that we can visually and physically perceive.
