  • Career Title: Gallerist - the owner or operator of an art gallery

    • Also known as “art dealer” or “art broker,” but “gallerist” has been adopted to shed negative connotations associated with those terms

  • Tasks

    • Buy & sell artworks; often search for ones with higher premiums

    • Work with curators and artists to determine what pieces will show

    • They may choose to specialize in different kinds of artwork overtime or stick to one, or they may accommodate lots of kinds of art at a time to allow customers to be exposed to all the choices

  • Necessary Skills

    • Well-versed in the kinds of art the are dealing with

      • Examples: medium, art history, background of the work or artist, telling real art from forgeries, etc.

    • Culturally aware and educated of what is trending to appeal to masses

    • Marketing strategist who can make great ads

    • Being able to run a business and also be able to keep accurate and extensive financial records

    • If they open their own, potentially architectural knowledge

    • Keen eye for aesthetics, interior design, and formal design principles

    • A knowledge of the laws surrounding the buying & selling the art and the rights of the customers and buyers
