A Reaction to Dan Kanach

Listening to the wonderful digital artist speak, he began by speaking on a subject I have been grappling with for a while: what is the difference between designing and art? In my medium, jewelry and fashion, it is very easy to be caught up in "kitch." "Kitch" is something that is created to be useful or to be appealing to the masses; and often jewelry and fashion repeats itself and does not challenge modern conventions. To elevate that work into art, it must be unusual either in its manner or material. Mr. Kanach hit this subject right on, and I feel inspired and excited that this principle applies to so many different sectors of art. This way, I know that the skills I am developing are ones I can apply if I decide to enter the field!
